Objective: Make and revise predictions to improve comprehension

During Your Reading (DYR):

1. You have already done a picture walk to make a prediction based on headings, titles, bold faced words, and picture. If you haven't, make sure you do.
2. Read Page 39 ONLY
3. Make a T chart (in notebook)
What I Know
My Prediction
Write Information from the text that you learned about
Write 2 predictions on what you think will happen next
Make sure you use BECAUSE in your prediction and use information from the text to SUPPORT your answer.
Ex: I will read about because it said in the text.
4. Read pages 40-41**
5. Did your predictions match what you read about, or did you have to make revisions? Explain (in notebook)

After Your Reading (AYR):

Choose a page and tell about something that surprised you.

Before You Read (BYR):

You can do this lesson on the forum (go the bubble that when you scroll on it say discussion posts. Add a new post and label it (BYR pg 42-44)
Think about what you just read on pages 39-41: What are Moai? Where is Easter Island? What probably caused the population of Easter Island to dwindle? (post)

During Your Reading (DYR):

1. **Remember, when making predictions you MUST support your answer. For example, Suppose you predicted that the Moai provided protection to the islanders. How would learning that one group of Moai looks like a family make you change your mind about that prediction? (post your answer, label it DYR 42-44)
2. Make a prediction after previewing pages 42-43
3. Read pages 42-43, change or modify your prediction if needed
4. Read page 44
5. Did your prediction match what you read, or did you need to revise it? Explain (Post on your DYR post)

After You Read (AYR):

Would you like to visit Easter Island and see the Moai statues? (Post and Label AYR 42-44)

Discussion:

1. Many humans have the need to elaborate.
For example, we are not happy with plain painted walls. We add pictures, posters, and other hangings. Some people even paint pictures and designs on their cars. Clothing designers think of all kinds of ways-sequins, braiding, patches, buttons-to make clothing more elaborate. Can you think of some other ways that people elaborate on objects that might seem too plain? (post, Label Discussion)
2. Comment on two other people's posts. Make sure they are appropriate. Try using I agree because... or I disagree because...
3. Read Learn the Strategy on Student Guide pg. 153
4. When adding details to your prediction, it makes it easier to determine if it was a good prediction or not. When writing simple, no-frill predictions, it doesn't make reading exciting. Make sure you elaborate so you can become great predictors!
5. Answer the questions on Student Guide pg. 153 (post, Label Answers 153)
6. Preview Student Guide pg. 154 The Search for an Unknown Lange
7. Read the questions in the margin and read. Answer questions before and after reading.
8. When done elaborating predictions and revising, practice reading for fluency
9. Reread passage 3 times trying to increase your reading time each time.
